As we all know that ageing leads to a gradual decrease in physical and mental capacity, risk of disease and ultimately, departing from this physical world. Almost all people above 70 years of age require significant help from others. But is today’s world of changing social values and a growing sense of independence among financially sound retirees, many people prefer to live in old age homes. Younger generation have less time to take care of elders due to professional reasons.
Ageing – scenario in India
India is country that has to take care of large ageing population where number of elder persons has increased from 76 million in 2001 to 103.8 million in 2011. It is estimated to increase to 143.20 million in 2021 and 173.2 million by 2026.
Ageing has become a major social challenge as senior citizens in India are facing many problems due to lack of adequate social security. A majority of them are in rural areas and more than 30% of them are below poverty line.
Old age sets with its evident health issues that include hearing loss, cataracts and other eye disorders, back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, diabetes, depression and dementia. So, there is always more need to take an extra care to provide dignified life to our senior citizens
Apart from adequate food, water, shelter, clothing and health care, they should have access to appropriate educational and training programmes and should be able to live in environments that are safe, adaptable to personal preferences and changing capacities.
The traditional Indian wisdom states that older persons should remain integrated in society and share their knowledge and skills with younger generations. At AAS Ashram and allied partner organisations they are motivated to seek and develop opportunities for service to the community and to serve as volunteers in positions appropriate to their interests and capabilities. With AAS they have access to the educational, cultural, spiritual and recreational resources of society and live with dignity and security, free of exploitation and physical or mental abuse.
