Vastu Guidance

Vastu shastra, the textual part of Vastu Vidya is a traditional Vedic system of architecture. It is the science of architecture that describes principles of design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement and spatial geometry. The designs of architectural structures are intended to integrate with nature. Ancient Vastu Shastra principles guide about design and layout of temples, houses, towns, cities, gardens, roads, water works, shops and other public areas.

Many modern day architectural projects incorporate theories of Vastu. Master plan of the pink city Jaipur in Rajasthan made by the king Jai Singh, Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya in Ahmedabad, Vidhan Bhavan in Bhopal, Chandigarh city are few examples.

IDEAL HOUSE WITH PERFECT VASTU:

Following are some ground rules and guidelines to design and construct an ideal dwelling.

  • The main door of the house should preferably be located in any of the exalted positions from the Northeast corner – either from North of Northeast or from East of Northeast.
  • Doors can be in South of Southeast or West of Northwest but main entrance should never be from the center of any direction.
  • Main entrance or door should be avoided in North of Northwest, East of Southeast, South of Southwest and West of Southwest.
  • There should not be any obstruction or water body just opposite the main entrance.
  • Best place for balconies is East and North and should definitely be avoided in South and West.
  • Ideal direction for kitchen is South east corner of the house and the second best option is North west corner. Cooking platform should be arranged in such a manner that the person cooking the food should face towards east. Position of kitchen in Northeast and Southwest corner is not considered good as this can create problems with respect to the health and finance of the inmates.
  • For dining West and East side rooms are considered good. Walls here should be painted in pink or orange to stimulate appetite. Dining table should be rectangular and one should face East or West while eating.
  • Food stuff should be stored in the Northwest room. Oil, butter, ghee, milk and other oily material can be stored in South east of the Northwest room.
  • Heavy equipments such as the grinder, fridge, etc, should be placed towards the South and West walls in kitchen.
  • Generator or transformer should be located in an open space in Southeast sector or Northwest sector.
  • Overhead water tank should be in Southwest corner of terrace preferably in West of Southwest.
  • Worship or meditation room should be in Northeast corner or in central portion (Brahmasthana) of the house. Idols or pictures of the God or Guru should touch the East wall in the prayer room facing West direction. For better concentration and devotion inmates should perform prayers facing East direciton.
  • Northeast corner should be clean and tidy.
  • Flow of rainwater should be from West to East or South to North and ultimately flow out from the Northeast corner of the house or plot.
  • Northeast, North and East walls should be decorated with photos or paintings of gods or natural scenery.
  • West, South and Southwest walls can be used for hanging pictures of departed souls. Pictures of living beings may be hung on the Eastern wall.
  • Master bedroom should be in the Southwest corner. Other bed rooms can be in the Central South and Central-West directions. Bedroom in the Northwest can be used as a guest room or only for daughters. Southeast corner is not good for bedrooms.
  • Children’s rooms should be in West or North with study desks in North or East so that they face towards East while studying.
  • While sleeping one’s head should point towards South. Children, however, can sleep with their heads pointing towards West. No one should sleep with their heads in North.
  • Living room should be in North or East sector. Heavy chandeliers or fancy lamps should never be installed in geometrical center of rooms.
  • Ideal position for TVs and computers is in Southeast corner of the living or study room. Northeast or Southwest corner should be avoided.
  • Center of the room, building and plot should always be free from loads, weights, pillars, columns, beams, water bodies, etc.
  • Staircase is preferred in South, West or Southwest of the building. Second preference in Southeast or Northwest. Northeast, North and the East should be avoided.
  • Circular/spiral staircases should be avoided. Number of steps in a staircase should be odd, including the landing step. Rise of stairs should be from East to West or from North to South. It is better to make sure that the steps are by the South and West walls, and that it should be constructed in such a way that the movement is in a clockwise direction while going upwards.
  • Toilets are best suited in Northwest corner of the building or rooms. Where Northwest toilets are not possible, Southeast toilets are allowed. Other alternative directions for toilets are Central-South or Central West. Closets in the toilets should face North or South, along the North-South axis; and should not face the East or West. See figure for all possible locations for toilets and bathrooms.
  • Toilets should be avoided in the Northeast, North and East.
  • Mirrors in the toilet and dressing room should be on the North or East walls.
  • A bathroom in the East sector is most preferred as the beneficial rays of the morning sun can enter and promote well being.
  • House should be extended by 4 feet to 5 feet in the North east direction to ensure the Northeast directional bliss for the household.
  • Pictures or wallpapers of landscapes depicting mountains should be hung on South and West walls only.
  • Pictures of lakes and river or other landscapes containing water should be on North and East walls.
  • Pictures of owls, eagles, battle scenes and carnivorous animals should not be used for interior wall decorations.
  • Pictures of horses, cows and elephants can be used for decoration purposes.
